With Nick in the Lake District

Millerground, Windermere

I’ve been on quite a few photo workshops with Nick Jenkins – I think my photography is improving, but can I be sure it’s down to his tuition??? One of the regular problems I have when I start a workshop is “getting in the zone”. The leader takes you to a place and says, “there’s this, and there’s that”, or “you could try this” – but I just can’t see anything! So it was at Millerground on the shore of Lake Windermere. This was the only shot I thought worth keeping, and I don’t think it’ll reach “Eighteen moments …” my photo book of the years’ shooting!

On the way from the Ribble Valley to Windermere I drove over a road I’d never been on before that took me past the Dent Viaduct (which is on the Settle to Carlisle railway line), not as impressive probably as the Ribblehead viaduct, but still an amazing sight in such a desolate landscape.

  1. I don’t do a lot of landscape photography myself, David, but the advice I’ve seen is to visit the same location several times. See at different times of day and in different weather conditions, for instance. It follows from that that you shouldn’t feel bad if you don’t get many good shots on your first visit.
Having said that, I like these two pictures, and the way the ‘lines’ lead you into the landscape.

  2. I know what you mean about ‘getting in the zone’ , I have a similar problem in art classes sometimes. I do love the composition of the lake photo , it has interesting features and a hint of Swallows and Amazons!

David, I am still learning as you well know, all the technical side of this pictorial art. so I could not comment on that side. However, I love the atmosphere emanating from your pictures. Thank you for making us share these souvenirs.

    1. You can teach me a lot about composition from some of your pictures Marie-Christine, I can tell you. Thanks for your kind words though.
