Botallack

This is one of my very favourite places. As an early teenager living in Cornwall and interested in geology, I would often take off on my bike and wander around the spoil heaps and the cliffs around Botallack Mine looking for pieces of cassiterite, galena, pyrites and copper pyrites. I would spend the whole day here thinking about the men who went down the shafts and make their way under the sea to mine for primarily tin. Just try and imagine the miners walking down the cliffside in the depths of winter only then to trust their lives to the man engine mechanism of the beam engine to take them down to the level they were working. Truly amazing.
