Our first sight of the county of Troms was at dawn as we entered the port of Halstad … … I just love the blues you get at dawn and dusk in these northern latitudes. Then it was on to Finnsnes (another bridge in the background) … … and the chance to take a close-up
Travelling north through the evening and night we saw the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) – but you’ll have to wait for those images – and we entered Nordland from Trøndelag. As we travelled north from Trondheim we enjoyed the winter sun and the wide open seascapes. The Norwegian coast is protected by hundreds of small islands, some of them large enough to have summer cottages on them. These, we were told are only occupied for a few summer months but the lighting and heating (electric)
What a change in the weather greeted us as we stopped in Trondheim. A walk through the town led us to the Old Bridge and the Nidaros Cathedral. Opportunities by the waterside to see some beautiful reflections. The rose window inside the cathedral is spectacular. The cathedral has a reputation for being very dark inside
The departure port for Hurtigruten’s MS Polarlys is Bergen and we enjoyed the lights of the city as we left. The first stop on the journey north is Ålesund. The night before had been a bit up and down as Storm Dennis stirred us up on the open sea passage as we left the fjord
